On Sunday May 17, 2015 the 56th annual “Cap” Porter Memorial Horse Draw will be held at the Westfield Fair Grounds. This pull is named after Kenneth A. Porter, “Cap” who was a famed horse puller from Wyben. He was a fixture at local pulls in the 1940’s and 50’s. He even won the prestigious New England Championship held at the Northampton Fair Grounds in 1944.
The Cap Porter Memorial is the first pull of the season locally and many teamsters bring their teams to show off their talent after the long slow winter months. usually at least 4 nearby states are represented as well as MA pullers. Last year we had 21 teams compete. Loyal fans and spectators always enjoy the show. It is still, even in this technological age, an awe-inspiring sight to see a team of well-trained horses pull a heavy load.
Some of Cap’s grandson’s and great grandsons still compete with their own horses and many Porter family members donate their time to help run the pull. There will be two classes of horses. The first class, starting at noon will be teams weigning 3200 punds or less, immediately following will be the over 3200 lb class.
The Fair Food Booth will be open all day selling refreshments. All proceeds from the booth go to support the Westfield Fair, which is held in August. Admission to the grounds is $7. The gate proceeds are entirely used to provide premiums for pulling teams. Children under 12 are free.
Also on the grounds that day will be a Tractor Pull. Gate opens at 9 a.m., horse draw starts at noon.
